Chapter 55.

Liev the babysitter, really!

Liev had been sat in his car all morning, and it was now just after two o’clock, and he was getting bored. Ava had been in touch soon after he had gone back to Spain and had blackmailed him into coming back to the UK to work for her. It was a case of, do this and you will be fine, do not, and all the money will be taken, and your past will come back. There was never really a choice. Liev hated the control she had over him, but it was not like it was hard work, and he was used to doing sleeper jobs. The trouble now was, it was getting on for two years, and the days and hours he was spending sitting doing nothing but watching this young man was taking its mental toll on him. Worse, it was stopping him enjoying the money he had. It had been a week since he had seen Jack Reed and had reported back to Ava that Jack, he had gone AWOL. Liev now had a special icon on his phone that Ava had set up to give him direct contact with her. Over the two years, Liev had watched this kid grow, and he was clever. There so no mistaking that, but over the last year he had taken to wearing different disguises. It had fooled Liev for a while, and he suspected he knew he was there, watching him, but he could tell from his body language that Jack might not know he was watching him and if he did, he was a good actor. The first disguise had Liev completely fooled, and it was only the walk that had got him rumbled. When Jack had returned later that day, he was sprightly and agile, not like the elderly man he was dressed like earlier, and as Liev looked at him closer through his binoculars. He could see the false beard and homemade mask had peeled away. It was funny at first, but as Jack became better at these disguises, Liev was finding it harder to spot him, but what was more important. What was he doing? He had asked Ava many times why he was watching Jack, but she would always reply, in good time you will know. Liev remembered this kid when he had first met him, and he did have something strange about him, but he was not so sure what it was, but what he did know. This kid was up to something, and after watching him for so long, Liev's curiosity was being pricked. Liev had followed him on many of his strange outings in Birmingham and some out of city towns, and he was never actually doing anything. He would go, have a walk about, then return. Almost like it was a dress rehearsal. Then he would come back to his flat and stay there for a day or two, then do the same. Apart from his regular driving lessons, this was Jack's weird routine.
